Motivation lies at the heart of every decision we make and every success we achieve. You may not know it, but it’s not your personality or your knowledge and skills that drive you onto success – it’s your motivation.

And unlike our personality, motivation is not fixed. It’s dynamic. It changes to adapt to the situation we are in and the challenges we face. You will know when you feel motivated to do something: it’s wonderful, it energises you and drives you onto to be the best you can be. But you also know when you don’t feel motivated. When your motivation levels are running so low, it’s hard to do anything. It’s hard to get out bed.

Understand what naturally motivates you and you’ll begin to understand what makes you do the things you do, and say the things you say. You’ll know what ‘makes you tick’. You’ll find direction. You’ll find success.

For teachers, when your students each complete a Motivational Map®, you will have the script to be able to talk to and teach them in the language of their motivators. You will truly know your pupils and be able to adjust your teaching in order to energise, motivate and inspire them everyday. When you think about it, how can you teach a child without knowing exactly what does and does not motivate them?

As we all know, it is no longer enough to say to a student: ‘You’re doing this because I told you to.’ Rewards and sanctions are important, and a school wouldn’t function without them, but appeal to a child’s intrinsic motivators, and you’ll see a remarkable increase in performance.
